As of 1 September 2026, Google began automatically upgrading Search campaigns to AI Max if they were using automatically created assets or the campaign-level Broad Match setting. If that describes your account, the change has already happened — and Google did not require your approval.
Short answer: Google announced on 5 August 2026 that Search campaigns using automatically created assets (ACA) or the campaign-level Broad Match setting would be automatically upgraded to AI Max from 1 September 2026. Advertisers could opt out by disabling those settings before the date. That window has now closed. Dynamic Search Ads are exempt until February 2027. If you run Search campaigns in Pakistan and have not checked your account this week, check it now.
Most Pakistani advertisers will not have seen the notification. It was sent by email to affected accounts in early August, in a period when a great many Lahore and Karachi businesses were focused on other things entirely. The upgrade proceeded regardless.
This briefing sets out what changed, how to tell whether your account was affected, and what to do about it now that the deadline has passed.
What Actually Changed
AI Max is Google's bundle of AI-driven features for Search campaigns — broader keywordless matching, automatically generated assets, and expanded landing page targeting. Previously it was something you opted into.
From 1 September, campaigns already relying on two specific settings were moved across automatically:
| Setting | What happened | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Automatically created assets (ACA) | Campaign upgraded to AI Max on 1 September | Upgraded |
| Broad Match at campaign level | Campaign upgraded to AI Max on 1 September | Upgraded |
| Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) | Exempt — migration postponed | Feb 2027 |
| Neither setting in use | No change | Unaffected |
Based on Google's announcement of 5 August 2026 to affected advertisers. DSA migration was postponed to February 2027 in a separate announcement on 11 June 2026.
Why This Matters More in Pakistan
Two reasons, and neither is obvious from the international coverage.
Broad Match is unusually common in Pakistani accounts. It is the default many freelancers and small agencies leave in place, because it requires the least ongoing work. That means a disproportionate number of local accounts met the upgrade criteria without anyone deliberately choosing to.
Broader matching costs more when your keywords are cheap. In a market where a click can cost PKR 8–40, wider matching pulls in a great deal of loosely related traffic very quickly. The same setting in a US account produces fewer, more expensive, better-qualified clicks. Here it can flood an account before anyone notices.
AI Max is not automatically bad. For accounts with solid conversion tracking, a clear offer and enough conversion volume to learn from, broader matching often works well.
The problem is not the feature. It is that a configuration change happened to accounts that were not set up for it, without the advertiser choosing the timing — and many of those accounts have no conversion tracking at all, which is precisely the condition under which broad matching wastes money fastest.
How to Check Your Account Today
Look for the AI Max label
Open Google Ads and review your Search campaigns. Upgraded campaigns display AI Max settings in the campaign configuration. If you see it on a campaign you did not opt in yourself, it was migrated.
Compare the last week to the week before
Filter to 1–8 September against the previous seven days. You are looking for a jump in impressions or clicks alongside flat or falling conversions — the signature of wider matching bringing in traffic that does not convert.
Read your search terms report
This is the single most useful check. Broader matching shows up here first as queries that have little to do with what you sell. If your property campaign is now matching "property tax" or "property lawyer," you have found the leak.
Add negative keywords immediately
Whatever irrelevant terms you found, exclude them. This is the fastest way to stop the bleeding while you decide on the longer-term configuration.
Verify conversion tracking is actually firing
Broader matching only works when the system can see what a good outcome looks like. If your conversion tracking is broken or absent — and in our audits of Pakistani accounts it frequently is — AI Max is optimising toward nothing.
Decide, rather than drift
You can configure AI Max deliberately, or restructure away from the settings that triggered it. Either is defensible. Leaving it as-is without checking is the one option that is not.

What Happens Next
Two dates worth putting in your calendar.
Late September 2026 — language targeting removal. Google announced on 13 August that campaign-level language targeting will be removed from Search and AI Max, with matching instead running on the language of your ads and landing pages. This affects Pakistani advertisers more than most, because running Urdu and English as separate targeted campaigns is standard practice here. The fix is to move the split out of the setting and into the content: one ad group per language, copy that does not mix, one landing page per language.
February 2027 — Dynamic Search Ads. DSA migration was postponed from its original date and now falls in February. If you rely on DSA, you have roughly five months to plan rather than react.
Google announced this same language targeting removal once before, in August 2025, with a deadline of end-2025. It did not happen then.
Deadlines slip. But the direction of travel does not — Google is steadily removing manual controls in favour of automated matching. Accounts built on careful manual structure will keep needing rework. Accounts built on clean conversion data will keep getting easier to run.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my campaign was upgraded?
Open your Search campaigns in Google Ads and check the campaign settings for AI Max. If it appears on a campaign you did not opt into yourself, it was migrated on 1 September. Comparing your search terms report before and after that date will confirm it.
Can I still opt out?
The window to prevent the automatic upgrade has passed. You can, however, restructure your campaigns away from the settings that triggered it, or configure AI Max deliberately rather than accepting the defaults. Both are reasonable responses — which suits you depends on your account.
Is AI Max bad for Pakistani advertisers?
Not inherently. It performs well in accounts with working conversion tracking and enough conversion volume to learn from. It performs badly in accounts without tracking, because the system has nothing to optimise toward. The problem in Pakistan is how many accounts fall into the second category.
My costs went up this week. Is this why?
Possibly. Check your search terms report first — if you are matching queries unrelated to what you sell, broader matching is the likely cause. But early September also brings seasonal shifts in several sectors, so look at the search terms before concluding.
What about Dynamic Search Ads?
DSA was exempt from the September upgrade. Its migration was postponed to February 2027, giving you roughly five months to plan.
What should I do about the language targeting change?
Move the language split out of the campaign setting and into your content: one ad group per language, ad copy that does not mix Urdu and English, and a matching landing page for each. If you use the API to build campaigns, check whether your scripts set language at campaign level — that will need removing.
The Bottom Line
A configuration change was applied to Pakistani Google Ads accounts on 1 September, and most advertisers here will not know it happened. It is not necessarily damaging — but it is not something to discover in next month's invoice either.
Spend fifteen minutes in your search terms report this week. If the queries look like your business, you are fine. If they do not, you have found something worth fixing.
